Rachel Manija Brown, author of the memoir All the Fishes Come Home to Roost: An American Misfit in India, and Sherwood Smith, writer of the YA novel Crown Duel, say that fear is running the YA book industry. Brown and Smith wrote an unpublished novel together called Stranger, featuring a young Asian gay male character with a boyfriend. “An agent from a major agency, one which represents a bestselling YA novel in the same genre as ours, called us,” Brown and Smith write. “The agent offered to sign us on the condition that we make the gay character straight, or else remove his viewpoint and all references to his sexual orientation.

Well, Slant isn’t male-male erotica, and it isn’t a romance either. But I find this new trend fascinating. However, the male characters in gay romances, just like the heros in straight romances don’t behave like real people, often don’t behave like gay men in real life. Still, I hope perhaps some straight women will be interested in reading gay books that focus on realistic gay issues in addition to gay romances.

From 1969 until 1998 there were 28 young adult novels with LGBT characters published. From 1998 to 2003, 42 more novels were published.
That’s from about 1 a year to almost 9 a year.

8 Asians, a popular blog on Asian American issues, just released a review on Slant.
Interestingly, I just found out, Wesley Yang, who recently wrote a fascinating article on Asian American experience in New York magazine, used to write for 8asian.com (maybe sill do).

Slant is #3 under #gay-> #ComingOut category on #Kindle #Amazon. This probably doesn’t mean much, but small things make me happy.
